Ads are coming to Facebook Messenger’s home screen

Facebook must really like the revenue that it’s getting from ads on the Facebook Messenger home screen, because after a limited beta in Thailand and Australia, the company has decided to roll out the advertising option worldwide. According to VentureBeat, you’ll likely see the flow of your home screen broken up by sponsored ads before the end of 2017. And just like the ads you see on Facebook itself and Instagram, they’ll be targeted and specific to you.

Aside from the home screen placement, businesses on Messenger can already send sponsored messages to users that have messaged their business previously. “[Advertising is] not necessarily everything, but it’s definitely how we’re going to be making money right now,” Messenger head of product Stan Chudnovsky told VentureBeat. “There are some other business models we are exploring as well, but they’re all around ads one way or another.” Lovely. I’m sure the brands are salivating. Back in May, Facebook revamped the Messenger home screen to again focus on chat and communication; other features like Games were shifted to different tabs.

Chudnovsky said that Facebook will “start slow” with the home screen ads in Messenger. “When the average user can be sure to see them we truly don’t know because we’re just going to be very data-driven and user feedback-driven on making that decision.” So maybe if enough people totally hate them, Facebook will stick to its other Messenger ad options.
And if not, well, remember that you can install Messenger Lite on Android to hopefully avoid a lot of this.

365 DAYS OF UNSHAKABLE DETERMINATION! - EMINENT

Image
With each passing day, memories are made, mistakes are made, lessons are learnt and victories are celebrated. It is on this note I humbly begin my short Epistle in commemoration of the one year anniversary of Determination Unshakable Team. It was God who planted this administration, and without him we couldn't have done anything spectacular not to mention celebrating a whole 365days of piloting the affairs of the students Union. We thank God for giving us the strength to shoulder the tasking call that comes with representing the interest of the majority. In the same vein, I would like to thank the vice chancellor and the whole administrative chain for their unwavering support and valued oriented leadership that has been the main strength of this administration for the past 365days. I will equally extend the hands of thank you to the students affairs unit for the pivotal role they have played in assisting us to make judicious use of the opportunity given to us by the students. To...

#KenyaDecides: Orphaned and broke, 23 year old student becomes Kenya’s youngest MP (Member of Parliament) A 23-year-old student has been elected as a Member of Parliament in Kenya’s Igembe South constituency following Tuesday’s election beating political bigwigs who were in the race against him. John Paul Mwirigi vied as an independent candidate trounced rich political bigwigs including a former deputy governor. The third year university student ran his campaigns on a near nothing budget, only relying on a bicycle to transverse the wide constituency, and not even his opponents flashy cars could deter him from pursuing his ambition. Following his win, a jubilated Mwirigi said his first agenda would be to support agribusiness activities, promote entrepreneurship and nurture talents. Mwirigi, an orphan, sat the national secondary school examinations in 2015, and says has lived in poverty. “In 2013 when I lost my father, the only bread winner I became devastated...

Microsoft’s Azure Stack private cloud platform is ready for its first customers

Image
Microsoft’s cloud strategy has long focused on the kind of  hybrid cloud deployments  that allow enterprises to run workloads in a public cloud like Azure and in their own data centers.  Azure Stack , its project for bringing the core Azure services into the corporate data center, is the logical conclusion of this. If developers can target a single platform for both the public and private cloud, the thinking goes, then hybrid deployments become almost trivial. After a year of technical previews, Microsoft has now delivered the first release version of Azure Stack to its hardware partners so that they can finish their certification process. As Microsoft announced at its  Inspire conference  today, partners like  Dell EMC ,  HPE  and  Lenovo  will start shipping their integrated systems with Azure Stack in September. Other partners, including Huawei and Cisco, will launch their systems at some point in the near future. These systems ...
