#KenyaDecides: Orphaned and broke, 23 year old student becomes Kenya’s youngest MP (Member of Parliament)

A 23-year-old student has been elected as a Member of Parliament in Kenya’s Igembe South constituency following Tuesday’s election beating political bigwigs who were in the race against him.

John Paul Mwirigi vied as an independent candidate trounced rich political bigwigs including a former deputy governor.

The third year university student ran his campaigns on a near nothing budget, only relying on a bicycle to transverse the wide constituency, and not even his opponents flashy cars could deter him from pursuing his ambition.

Following his win, a jubilated Mwirigi said his first agenda would be to support agribusiness activities, promote entrepreneurship and nurture talents.

Mwirigi, an orphan, sat the national secondary school examinations in 2015, and says has lived in poverty.

“In 2013 when I lost my father, the only bread winner I became devastated and almost lost hope in my education. Sometimes we could go without food but one day as I was sleeping I dreamt reading a speech in parliament and that is how I started growing interest in politics,” he said.

Kenya conducted its general election on Tuesday, as incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta ran sought a second and final mandate. Uhuru’s main challenger was long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Unofficial results show president Uhuru has a strong lead against Raila, though the latter has refuted those results already, saying the electoral commission’s system were hacked and figures tampered with.
