UNILORIN STUDENT GIVES THE ANTIDOTES TO LAUTECH PROBLEM

Image
LAUTECH AND ITS SUGGESTED SOLUTION It saddens my heart each time I look back into the memory lane and digest on what used to be a great citadel of learning; LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, popularly known as "LAUTECH". Especially, when one recollects how enviable this institution was among her peers back then. LAUTECH was a dream of those who aspired for the best higher education, especially those in technological or science related fields, because the institution could be liken to "Havard or Oxford " of Nigeria around the time if I'm not exaggerating. But Before I proceed, let me make a preamble in a glance on the history of "LAUTECH". This institution was among the pioneers universities of technology in the country, established in (1990) to be precised after series of deliberations led by the then Military governor of old Oyo state "Tunji Olurin". This institution got her name after the Late premier of Western region "

ASUU TO STRIKE AGAIN!

Image
University teachers are set for another strike over the controversial 2009 agreement they reached with the Federal Government among other issues. A meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of ASUU will hold today in Abuja ahead of the action. Yesterday, all chapters of the union nationwide held a congress as directed by its national body to decide whether or not to go ahead with the planned strike. The options given to them are: Whether it should be total and indefinite strike, one month strike, one week notice, and no strike at all. This followed the directive sent to branches by ASUU National President Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi as he was mandated by the NEC meeting held at the Nasarawa State University (NSU). Chairman ASUU-Lagos State University (LASU) Dr Isaac Akinloye Oyewunmi said yesterday that the chapter resolved in favour of “total and indefinite strike”. In August last year, the union threatened strike over thengovernment’s failure to implement the 2009 agreement. Accord

RWANDAN NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT - VISIONARY OR TYRANT?

Image
Rwanda's Paul Kagame - visionary or tyrant? 05 August 2017 Lanky and soft-spoken, Rwanda's President Paul Kagame portrays himself as a modern-day politician who sees social media as a way of championing democracy and development. However, his opponents accuse him of being the latest in a long line of authoritarian rulers in Africa, who will win the 4 August election after his regime brutally suppressed the opposition and killed some of his most vocal critics - a charge his allies vehemently deny. One of the first African leaders to set up a websitewith a presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Flickr, Mr Kagame believes the IT revolution has meant there are "few excuses" for political intolerance and poverty. "There is a global awareness of national events - for example, in China, and days before that, in Iran, that is due to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and relatively inexpensive access to technology," the 59-year-old Rwandan leader said at

365 DAYS OF UNSHAKABLE DETERMINATION! - EMINENT

Image
With each passing day, memories are made, mistakes are made, lessons are learnt and victories are celebrated. It is on this note I humbly begin my short Epistle in commemoration of the one year anniversary of Determination Unshakable Team. It was God who planted this administration, and without him we couldn't have done anything spectacular not to mention celebrating a whole 365days of piloting the affairs of the students Union. We thank God for giving us the strength to shoulder the tasking call that comes with representing the interest of the majority. In the same vein, I would like to thank the vice chancellor and the whole administrative chain for their unwavering support and valued oriented leadership that has been the main strength of this administration for the past 365days. I will equally extend the hands of thank you to the students affairs unit for the pivotal role they have played in assisting us to make judicious use of the opportunity given to us by the students. Does Silicon Valley have a moral responsibility to stop developing robots?

The debate about the impact of new technology, particularly AI, on society continues to rage. Last month, for example, the current front runner to replace Jerry Brown as Californian Governor in 2018,  Gavin Newsom  – traditionally one of Silicon Valley’s most vocal supporters –  warned  graduating computer science students at UC Berkeley about the duty to “exercise their moral authority” to improve society. “This is code red, a firehose, a tsunami, that’s coming our way,” he said about the impact of new technology on jobs and inequality. So is Newsom right? Is the job of entrepreneurs and technologists, in his words, to “exercise their moral authority”? To answer this question, and to talk more generally about the impact of AI on employment, I sat down with the co-director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy,  Andrew McAfee . One of the world’s leading authorities on the economic consequences of new technology, McAfee is also the co-author of the 2014 bestseller  The

Fascinating photographs of 1930s Nigeria taken by a high-ranking education inspector in the decades before its independence from Britain have been unearthed after more than 65 years. The images were captured by Edward Harland Duckworth, who served as inspector of Education in Nigeria from 1930 to 1944, and collated into a photo album by his friend Henry Svory, who was a head of department at Ibadan University at that time. They provide an insight into the lives of the native population in the West African country in the decades preceding its independence from Britain in 1960. source:  https://gossip.naij.com/1096554-these-13-photos-nigeria-independence-auctioned-n400k.html?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C8627661188 source:  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4360200/Fascinating-photos-Nigeria-taken-65-years-ago.html

Driver, Passengers Land In A Ditch While Running Away From Road Officials.Photos

Image
An accident which happened along Enugu-Onitsha expressway was said to have been caused by road officials who were pursuing a driver. In the course of the hot pursuit, the driver landed in a ditch while trying to evade arrest. According to an online report, the road safety officers abandoned the wounded victims to their own fate and fled the scene.. Read what was shared by Von Nwadukwe on Facebook. Saw this accident scene at the Ugwu onyeama segment of the enugu - onitsha express way earlier. The car in the ditch fell in there while trying to get away from a team of FRSC officials who were following him in a hot pursuit. Regrettably the officers abandoned the occupants to their own fate and fled the scene though amazingly the occupants survived without life threatening injuries. These are sad realities of what state our dear country is in, where citizens are law breakers and law enforcement agents are indisciplined. We shall overcome.
